The Pope's Feeding Tube And The Baby Bottle

By Judy Ramsook
Mar. 30, 2005

The Pope has been fitted with a nasal feeding tube until he regains his strength and as this piece of information was still being processed, I wondered, as babies we were all fed via a different sort of feeding device.

A little known object called a bottle, and just like hospital patients who are too weak or unable to feed themselves, so are babies fed by a bottle until they too are strong enough to eat solid food, after being taught to do so by their parent/guardian. But is it natural?

If indeed babies have been fed this way for decades and a hospital feeding tube can be used in the same way to give nutrition to its patients, then it can be viewed as being natural even though both items are man made objects.

Especially so if it is successfully functioning as a feeding device, for if not for the bottle babies use, maybe something else would have been devised, but the bottle worked and so has the feeding tube been proven to work also.

And just like some may wonder if an eating utensil such as a fork or spoon can be viewed as being natural, yes, and so are a baby bottle, and feeding tube.

For they all serve the same function; transferring food from one place to our bodies where it is ultimately needed.
