The Writings Of John

One thing I find interesting in the writings of the Apostle John is that his three major writings (his Gospel, his First Epistle and his Revelation) speak of his personal experience with the Lord and his eyewitness view of much of what the Lord accomplished.

He begins his Gospel with the Word [Jesus] becoming flesh, and beholding the only begotten of the Father. His first epistle to the general church population begins with his declaration of that which he saw and touched. His written revelation begins with words spoken directly to him from the risen Christ.

Of the four Gospel writers, it was given to John to present Jesus as God in the flesh. As Mark did not require a recap of the genealogy of Jesus, after all, who cares about the lineage of a servant? John did not need to recap either genealogy from Luke or Matthew because God does not have a genealogy. God has always been and always will be.

John was given view of many things other disciples only heard about. He was present at the Mount of Transfiguration. He was present at the Cross, and he was one of two disciples to enter the empty tomb after the resurrection. He was one of the first to be called by Jesus. He is reportedly the last of the original disciples to die.

All of these “first” and “only” circumstances for John prepared him for his own ministry. They also prepared him to be the receiver of the final prophetic words of God.

It is John who tells us that there will be no wondering at the return of Jesus. Every eye will see and behold the returning King of Kings. I know there are those who hold the second coming as some invisible, spiritual event, but that flies in the face of the declarations of angels and the Lord himself that explain the second coming as an event just as physical and miraculous as the first advent.

There exist thousands of attempts to explain away the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the first physical manifestation of God among men. All of these explanations are weak and incapable of logical reasoning without preconceptions. The chief preconception is that God does not exist. Because of that, the majority of arguments are based on a false premise.

When shown in the light of God’s existence, all the miracles and teachings of the Lord are quite understandable and logical. John was sure to reveal the meanings behind the actions of the Christ. All of the Lord’s actions are known in the light of fulfilled prophecy.

That is why it is important for Christians to speak the word. There were as many prophecies concerning the Lord’s Second Advent as the first. We understand that God will one day fulfill the words concerning His second coming and the fulfillment will take all the forms written of by the Apostle. It will not be a good day for the unbelieving element of humanity.

There are no adequate explanations as to how so many words from so many prophets over the course of centuries were fulfilled by one man apart from the fact that Jesus was exactly who he said he was.

The angel told the men that the one they saw ascend into heaven would “come in like manner”. The prophets, who wrote and spoke of the Lord’s first advent, wrote and spoke of the second coming of God’s son. How could they be so right concerning the first and then be expected to be so wrong about the second?

The answer is that they are not wrong. The second coming will happen. Christ will return to establish his rule on this earth. The writings of John are there for the people of faith to read and take comfort from.
