Mar. 29, 2005 When you get in a car thesedays anything can happen. Problem is, there are so many lunatics out there, that even if you mind your own P's and Q's, you can still get into trouble. I drive like an old man, not so slow as to cause problems, but very carefully. I like the school of defensive driving. I remember my driving instructor in the 'in class' section. He provided a good example. He asked the class if they had to worry about a car waiting to get onto the road from a side street when you had the right of way and were just driving along... The answer was as follows; Not really but if you stopped worrying about it too much thats the day the guy would just pull out and right into you. I've found its true. I always err on the side of caution, and its helped, as many people seem to just get in a car and drive from point A to B as fast as they can. I am surprised there is not more carnage. As for flipping the bird, giving dirty looks, tailgaiting, or playing at any other game like that, forget it brother, its not worth it. Why be worried? Because you never know who you are dealing with. Why not to take a chance? I'll give one example... Rushing to a highschool hockey game once, I was tailing a car a bit too close (this is long before the days of defensive driving...that took experience and some maturity). Anyway, when we stopped at at an intersection, the guy gets out of his car. No problem at that time, espescially since the friend I was with was not the type of person to be intimitdated to say the least! The stranger starts towards our car, and we both get out... He was about five feet tall. We were both over six feet tall, and, obviously, there were two of us. Tough hockey players. Well, this little guy got closer and then we saw his eyes. They were insane with murder! No other way to put it. My pal and I hopped quickly back in the car and drove away. This guy took a big run and must have leeped ten feet and lunged onto our car. He smashed it a few times with his fists, then jumped off and to the side. We just drove on as he chased us in his car but were able to loose him. So driving, seems like all bets are off and anything goes...road rage and all that stuff. So stay cool, stay defensive, stay aware, (of course stay sober too!), and like the television jingle says, 'arrive alive.' ------------ About the author: Brian Michael Barbeito is a struggling poet and free lance writer from Aurora, Ontario, Canada.
