Going To Gaelic Ireland? Better Brush Up On The Lingo

By Judy Ramsook
Mar. 29, 2005

This is for the active tourist if you're planning a trip to Gaelic Ireland anytime soon.

According to an AP report, it will be helpful if you brush up on Gaelic Irish, for soon that part of the Emerald Isle will be changing its English Road signs from English/Irish to Irish only and can be confusing for anyone unfamiliar with the lingo. Why?

It's an attempt to encourage more patriotism among the people of Gaelic Ireland and while the change might be all right for the locals, it could be rather confusing for newcomers to the region, especially if you do not comprehend the language.

The change would affect more than twenty-three hundred towns, villages, crossroads and fields that previously had bilingual signs in both English and Gaelic. Those signs will now be Irish or Gaelic only.

And although the newly enacted law that allows for the change of the language does not pertain to independent map makers, they are still expected to follow through with the new policy.

So enjoy your visit, take in the lush scenery, and don't be embarrassed if you need to ask for directions.
