Pedophilia--What Does That Mean?

Miss Anna Gibson, were she alive today, would be rolling over in her grave. (That's a joke.) She was my Latin teacher in junior high, and always emphasized how many of our words have roots in Latin --or Greek, for that matter. She was quite elderly, and I often considered that she might have personally witnessed the fall of the Roman Empire.

But anyway, since I think women are interesting, lovely creatures, perhaps I could be called a gynophile, meaning I like women.

But I have never felt like kidnapping, brutalizing, torturing, raping, or killing one.

So what is it with "pedophiles?" The word means that they "like children." But since when do people who like children torture, rape, and kill them? Isn't the word inappropriate? Perhaps we need to think about it rationally.

Perhaps there are some pedophiles who fit the definition of the word by giving the kids milk and cookies and tucking them into bed and sharing porno magazines wtih them. Does that sound like Michael Jackson? Maybe he really loves children!

But the rest of them don't seem to fit the meaning of the word. These people don't seem to like children at all. If one can judge by their actions, it is more a hatred. Why does it turn so? Are they so self-involved and narcissistic in a psychiatric way that they become angry when a 6-yr-old girl doesn't respond to their approaches by smiling and laughing and proclaiming undying love for the pervert? Are they in some deep and strange way embarrassed or gulty by their actions and hope to eradicate evidence? Can't they stand rejection? What is it with these people?

The evidence, near as I can determine, is that these people don't reform and so it makes little sense to try rehabilitation, to keep them in jail a few years and then turn them loose, and to expect then that some parents can keep track of them by the internet.

It would be better to have a speedy trial and hang them. But we could give them some milk and cookies first. I wouldn't want lack compassion.

Here's the confusing part, however: If a pedophile likes children, does a pedometer measure how many children he likes?
