Condoleezza Rice Misspeaks Again

By Thomas Keyes
Mar. 28, 2005

What trickery does Condoleezza Rice have in mind?

The Washington Post published an editorial on April 16, 2004, which stated, “Ariel Sharon left Washington yesterday with a landmark achievement in hand: For the first time, an American president has put the United States on record as supporting Israel’s eventual annexation of parts of the West Bank and as rejecting the return to its territory of Palestinian refugees."

Sharon, who had threatened to cancel his visit to the White House, unless George W. Bush agreed to the Israeli settlements on the West Bank in writing, was gambling that Bush would cave in on perhaps the sole issue on which Bush's six predecessors had stood firm. And his gamble paid off.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz boasted, "Sharon got it all," and one can imagine the sense of pride that 6,000,000 Israelis felt upon learning that their prime minister had laid down the law to the president of the mightiest nation in history.

Ariel Sharon was so elated at having been able to bend Bush to his will that he rhapsodized, "Speaking of the Palestinians, they were dealt a lethal blow. It will bring their dreams to an end." And to celebrate, he apparently ordered the assassination of Abdulaziz ar-Rantisi, the leader of Hamas, the next day. It's hard to imagine that Bush didn't approve of that too.

Now Condoleezza Rice is expressing the displeasure of the US government at the expansion of Jewish settlements on the West Bank, as if US agreement to the expansion had not already been wrung out of Bush, subsequently to the stage- managed 'freeze' of March, 2001.

I've never paid the least attention to anything that Rice has said. She lies glibly and shamelessly, merely parroting her master in the White House. And now that she's Secretary of State, she acts as if she's going to set the guidelines for Russia, China and the rest of the world. She's as smug and devious as they come, and her utterances mean nothing.

Daniel Kurtzer, US ambassador to Israel, denied allegations that he had said US had never agreed on expanded settlements in the West Bank. Quoth he, "And U.S. policy is the support that the president has given for the retention by Israel of major Israeli population centers as an outcome of negotiations." It looks as if somebody applied a little pressure to Kurtzer to get him to recant. Trying to pretend that the US calls the shots around there, he was apparently corrected by the Israelis.

So what is Rice talking about? Of course, Jews have always had tacit US approval to appropriate whatever Palestinian lands they want, ever since the Balfour Declaration was adopted by Congress in 1918. Rice knows that that's her master's policy as well as his master's policy. She always does exactly what Sharon has Bush tell her to do, when it comes to Middle East policy.

So she must be saying such things merely to fool Arabs, as if she really has the concerns of Palestinians in mind. Only trouble is, Arabs are not so easy to fool. Probably, in a couple of weeks, she'll admit again that she "misspoke."
