Mar. 28, 2005 As the title suggests, I’m chiming in on my own point of view on the Terri Schiavo issue in Florida. I’ve sat back and listened and read all of the talk on both sides of the case. I have heard all the gossip and trash talked on both sides. I have even considered issues that have occurred in my family as well. As someone in the treatment field I’ve even listened to medical professionals chime in on their points of view. I prefer a more simplistic approach, though. This woman is not (has not) been receiving extraordinary care. No life threatening diseases were being kept at bay with IV’s and serums to keep her alive. She was being allowed food and water. That’s it. She got food and water and air to breath. Now we come to my point. What if, I mean really think about this, what if her husband was to place a pillow over her face and not allow air into her lungs. What if he held that pillow smashed against her face until her lungs, saturated with waste gasses and CO2 suddenly gave out and respired no more. What if he held that pillow over her face until she stopped breathing, her heart, no longer getting oxygen, gave out and discontinued to deliver blood to her brain. What is the difference between that horrid scenario and what is happening now? The only difference is that her husband got a judge to clamp off the food and water going into her system. Sorta’ like the judge and everyone else was just holding the other side of the pillow to her face. Her husband stated that she wanted this to happen. “Please kill me if I can’t stop you”, she said. Her husband said that she is brain dead. If that is the case then what is the harm? The young woman who occupied that body no longer exists (if that is true) so what is the harm? And the other way? If there is still a spark of her left in that body? Then it becomes murder. There is no dignity in this. This is nothing more than a much slower version of her husband placing a pillow over her face and slowly and cruelly smothering her to death. Maybe that will put some of this into perspective for you. ------------ About the author: Mike Russell is a Ninja/fighter pilot/ astronaut with x-ray vision who likes to make up stuff about the author when his wife isn't looking.
