Mar. 26, 2005 Unless someone is holding a weapon at your head, no one can make you do something, especially if that something happens to be an act you do not wish to perform, for there is and has always been a little known thing called 'free will' and then there are some outside influences that people might want to lay blame on for some actions. We have all, at some point or another heard someone older than us say that some song lyrics or movie scene can make their teens perform actions that they would not otherwise engage in. Right? Right. But before the hip hop/rap music genre there were other forms like good old rock and roll, new wave, disco and other forms of music. And you may find this archaic, but when the 'John Travolta' flick, 'Saturday Night Fever' was in full swing at the various cinemas, some parents did not want their teens to watch it, afraid that they might be influenced to do things that one might consider to be inappropriate. But just because a certain movie scene or song lyric may motivate someone to think about a certain part of life, does not necessarily mean that the young ones among us will be influenced enough to actually carry it out. The truth of the matter is, some persons will do whatever it is they want to do regardless of any type of influence, it is known as having and exercising free will. Music, movies, and books are there for our entertainment and learning pleasure, and although this might be hard to take, next time you know someone who does something you consider inappropriate, just stop and think that it may not have been the racy music lyric or explicit movie scene that may have influenced their act, but that of free will. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
