IMAX Theaters Refused To Show Volcanoes Of The Deep Sea

By Robert Paul Reyes

A few years ago I moved from the Left Coast to a red state in the South. I'm still trying to convince friends I left behind in San Francisco, that the denizens of Virginia are not characters straight out of "Deliverance."

But I'm fighting a losing battle, it seems every day there's a news item that dispels the idea that Southerners are living in the 21st century.

Case in point: Several IMAX theaters in the South have refused to show a science film on volcanoes because of concerns it might offend evangelicals who don't believe in evolution.

The IMAX production called "Volcanoes of the Deep Sea" makes a connection between microbes found in undersea volcanoes and human DNA.

Charleston IMAX director Lisa Buzzelli said it's important to select movies that will sell in her area. Buzzelli said many people in the Charleston area believe in creationism, not evolution.

Films, indeed all art, is supposed to open eyes and minds to new ideas -- not cater to superstitions and archaic ideas.

What's next, will theater owners refuse to screen "Apollo 13" because from outer space the earth looks like a round ball? We wouldn't want to offend folks who believe that the earth is flat, now would we?
