Mar. 25, 2005 I was going to keep my mouth shut about Terri Schiavo; after all, I have a crazy daughter-in-law to worry about, but then again why shouldn't I comment since everyone else has. Personally, the whole incident saddens me--why can't Micheal Schiavo just give Terri's custody to her parents? It doesn't really matter if Terri is in a PVS or not, what matters is she didn't leave a living- will, and all the courts have to prove she didn't want to live like this is HEARSAY. It's only the husband, his family and friends that swear Terri didn't want to be kept alive with a feeding tube. If Michael Schiavo gave over custody it would cost him nothing--the parents have received enough donations to take care of Terri comfortably. Why should he care after all he basically has another wife (common-law anyways). My mother was put on a ventilator in 2003 and a day afterwards her doctor was insisting that we pull the plug--that there was no hope. I said talk to me again in about a month and I will let you know. Well,it turned out that one of the reasons she couldn't breath on her own was that her salt level had gotten so low she almost died. Within 3 weeks she was off the ventilator completely and breathing on her own. Not that that is Terri's case, but it still should make people think. Christopher Reeve was once asked about Terry before he died, and he said that he had probably said he didn't want to be kept alive the way he was at the time of the interview, but he was glad his plug hadn't been pulled. And as for the feeding tube, well, many people have problems that require feeding tubes that have nothing to do with whether they are brain-damaged or not-- digestive problems, swallowing problems or any number of other medical reasons. There is a nagging doubt about just what Terri wanted--why not err on the said of life even if it is a life some of us can't relate to or say we don't want for ourselves.
