The Silver Surfer

By Brian Michael Barbeito

I think the big guns in Hollywood should make a movie about The Silver Surfer. He is a lesser known comic book hero to be sure, but worth a film. I'm not a comic book junkie or anything, but it is all entertaining. I'm tired of Spiderman and Batman and Spiderman and Batman and Spiderman and Batman, if you know what I mean...

The Surfer became who he was in a very interesting way. There was this planet eating mean guy named Galactus, and when he was about to destroy the Surfer's planet, a deal was struck whereby the Surfer, at that time more of a mortal type, would be given the 'power cosmic' by this Galactus in order to search out other planets for him to devour. In return, Galactus would spare the Surfer's home planet.

Well, then we have the Surfer riding around space and running into all kinds of worlds, troubles, and yes, romances. From what I read, the Surfer seemed to have girlfriends all over the place. They always seemed beautiful and mysterious. I guess they dug a guy who had 'the power cosmic' in his hands.

Well, just an idea. For fantasy, why not go all the way? Spiderman and Batman are so earthbound. In this movie we have the same heroic themes, but taking place within the arena of space itself. So, Silver Surfer, '...skyrider of the spacewaves...', (as Richard Gere called him in the remake of Breathless), coming soon to a theatre near you?

Probably not. He's just not mainstream enough.
