Mar. 23, 2005 Maybe one of the biggest puzzles (and most revealing of revelations) to emerge from the tragedy of the Terri Schindler Schiavo case is that most people on the political left are rooting for her death. Why do you suppose that is? It rings pretty hollow that these people are for "States rights" since they are NOT for any such thing in just about anything else...quite the opposite, in fact. The oddest thing is that those rooting for Terri to die are those who'd be standing in the street screaming "Free Mamua" or "No blood for oil" or protesting the death penalty for the worst criminals in the country. Yet, they are all hoping against hope that Terri will die before her supporters can manage to get her feeding tube reinserted, and the WORST part is, their wishes may come true! What motivates these people? It certainly isn't some phony sense of "compassion," for Terri isn't suffering or in pain. In fact, she frequently shows signs of being entirely aware of her surroundings. A nurse who had worked with her said yesterday that Terri often responded to jokes by laughing out loud! This nurse was appalled that Terri was being killed and said so. She lost her job this morning. Then what drives them? What's the worst thing that could happen if Terri Schiavo should win her freedom from this virtual slavery Judge George Greer and her husband have kept her in at LEAST for the last two years? She has not been taken outdoors. Her parents have been forbidden to take videotape or still photographs of her, feed her by mouth or bring in other neurological experts to assess her condition and her reactions to stimulae--which would prove once and for all whether she is truly in a "persistent vegetative state" as Greer ruled some years ago; a state easily disproven by her ability to react to stimulae and not simply respond "reflexively" as he and the husband claim. Is Judge Greer afraid that Terri will be shown NOT to be in PVS? Could THAT be his motivation--that his ego won't let him be proven wrong in this case? Who knows, but Terri's husband is an even bigger puzzle. He CLAIMED that she'd expressed that she didn't want to be kept alive by artificial means before the onset of her current condition. Then, on the Larry King live, the evening of March 18th, he said, "We don't KNOW what Terri would want, but we know what WE want." [emphasis mine] It seems that the left wants her dead because they've adopted a culture of death--except for criminals, apparently. They oppose ANY restrictions, however reasonable, on abortion on demand. They mananged to push through a referendum in Washington state permitting "assisted suicide" or,in other words, euthanasia. They speak favorably of the Dutch euthanasia laws which permit two doctors to decide for themselves that someone isn't living a "quality life" and kill them. They protest legal killing of the most heinous criminals, but then protest any effort to prevent the killing of our most innocent. Apparently, this is another case of the blatant hypocrisy that's become almost routine from the left and especially the Democrat left. Kill those whose life condition doesn't meet THEIR concept of a quality life, but oppose the killing of child rapists, serial murderers, those that maim and torture and those who kill police officers by execution. It's insane, of course, but that seems to be their pattern, especially over the last 35 years or so. Maybe they are thinking, in THIS case, that if we are successful in saving the life of THIS innocent woman that will embolden us to try to take steps to save OTHER innocents--and that they cannot stand still for. ------------ About the author: David A.
