We Have Corn...

By Darrel Robert Day Jr.
Mar. 21, 2005

There is a new gas getting a great deal of attention these days. Especially if you are living in Iowa and have corn to sell. Actually, it is an old gas getting a new bunch of followers. People following it because it serves such a multitude of purposes. What am I talking about? Why, Ethanol... of course.

Some of you may be wondering what ethanol is. Well, it is a clear liquid with an agreeable odor.It is made by fermentting and distilling sugars. Hmmmmm, it sounds a little bit like the stuff my grandpa used to make in the hollow way down behind his house. I don't remember him feeding it to his tractor though. It seems to me that he kept it in a jug in the horse stalls. The only tank I remember is Grandpa getting "tanked." This is a little different from that but not really as far away from Grandpa's horse stalls as you might think.

Ethanol is referred to as ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or ETOH. Henry Ford used it to fuel his first vehicles a very long time ago.Pure fuel ethanol contains chemical properties identical to that of other grain alcohol. As such, it must be denatured or made unfit for human consumption. Normally that is accomplished by adding the ethanol to regular gasoline. That way no "Grandpa is going to run to the local "fill and go" and take a jug home to drink. There are different mixes of the ethanol as far as what percentage goes into the gas. 10%,85% and 95%, also sold as E10 through E95 with E10 being the most commonly used today.

What is so great about this gasoline? Ten percent of the United States' corn production is now used for the creation of Ethanol. That means that more farmers can produce corn with a dedicated displacement to Ethanol Plants throughout the U.S. The results are good for us for so many reasons. It produces cleaner exaust that will cause less damage to our lungs and to the environment as a whole. Secondly, it allows farmers to sell their crop which in turn gives more money back to the community. The fact that it is produced by crops that use the power of the sun, it is considered a renewable fuel.

Other reasons that ethanol should be the gas that you use today is that it creates jobs from the foundation all the way to the finished product.During ethanol plant construction, approximately 370 local jobs are created. During ethanol plant operation, up to 4,000 local jobs are created. Ethanol plant construction creates $60 million to $130 million in additional income. Ethanol plant operation creates $47 million to $100 million in additional income. Also,Ethanol plant operation creates $47 million to $100 million in additional income. That is a lot of jobs being created right here in our own good ole' U.S. of A. Anddddd, if you use Ethanol in your vehicle you do not have to worry about putting such things as "Heat" in your tank to combat condensation. The ethanol does that for you.

Two large Ethanol Plants have been built less than twenty miles from my home. That is good for businesses and job opportunities around here. My family owns and operates a motel nearby and the construction workers needing a place to stay for months on months have increased the motels income 100 fold. All of these good reasons to put that Ethanol right into your gas tank. Do your part and help keep jobs here in the U.S. If we all can do this then who knows... Maybe one day we won't need to depend on other countries for crude oil. And at the same time, we won't have to go into our forests or open lands to dig for oil. We can be animal and environmental friendly as well.

So the next time you are at a gas station, go ahead... pick the one that says "Ethanol" on the pump. You are not only helping your vehicle, but you are in turn helping your fellow man by providing a job for him/her.
