Mar. 21, 2005 As a former Alaskan, I have a different opinion of the drilling in ANWR thing. Anybody that has been that far up north knows that the caribou support the largest mosquito population in the world. The mosquito is Alaska's unofficial state bird. This pest, that sucks the life out of most animals, lives everywhere in the state but the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge has one of the largest mosquito populations in the state. The congress is saving a treasure, the mosquito, by sending humans up there to start drilling during the summer months. By killing off the main food source of the mosquito, by drilling in caribou calfing and grazing lands, the humans will become an alternative food source. As for the logging companies that will be making money off of, what? Trees do not get that big that far up north, the area that the Congress has approved of drilling in, is a big plains area larger than the Mid West, which is butted up against a large mountain range. That is just adressing an article I just read here on the UK. ANWR is a farce, a fools hope to get cheaper gas for large SUV's and bigger plastic products. Alaskan's hope that this will help fuel bigger pork barrel spending in the state and create more jobs. It will temporarily, but what happens when the big black gravy from the ground is gone? I lived in the state for twenty years, and I know what will happen when the oil is gone. Alaska will become the largest mosquito reserve, but even they will become an endangered species after people have killed all of the animals the great bug feeds off of, by destroying habitat. ------------ About the author: Being a full time writer is the hardest job that I have tried.
