Jim Feels Bad

By Artie Kutsumitis

"Where is Race Day, Part Two?" some of you have asked. Well, after the brutal Winter we have had here in New England I haven't had time to submit it. But fear not, it is somewhere on my computer, and I will get it on U-K .com shortly.

I came across the following story, purely by accident and I would like to share it with our readers. I stopped by my favorite coffee shop one afternoon to get my usual, when I came across an elderly gentleman named Jim. He didn't look too happy, in fact, he seamed down right miserable. After paying for my order, and being the nosey writer, and busy body that I am, I sat down across from Jim, and struck up a conversation. I asked him if everything was alright, to my surprise, good old Jim was dying to tell someone his story. I told him that I was his man. With my recorder at the ready, he began to tell me his story.

It seems Jim was a retired truck driver who, after leaving the job he'd loved for thirty years, was just trying to find something to keep busy. The nice young couple next door had just purchased their new home, and working hard to pay for it. Jim, being the nice person that he is, offered to take care of their lawn and garden needs, for free. They thought he was an Angel sent from Heaven. Just think, Jim would do everything, mow the lawn, clean the leaves, plant the flowers, prune the hedges, and it was all for free.

This went on for months, every morning, seven days a week, Jim would keep their yard looking good. And, it didn't cost them a dime. One day, Jim remembers, at the end of July, the wife approached Jim and told him that a landscaping company contacted her, out of the blue, and told her that the job that was being done, was not a professional one. There are things that can be done to make the yard stand out, and whoever is doing the work now, just has no clue what they are doing.

In "Keeping Up With The Jones'", the wife hired the landscaper, from just his word alone, and told Jim he didn't have to come over anymore. To make matters worse, she told Jim what the landscaper said. This hurt Jim's feelings, and to tell you the truth, it choked me up as well.

People can be crude, and sometimes, a little to forthcoming with information of that type. There are times in your life when you should just "Keep your mouth shut." Something like that has happened to me a couple of times, and let me tell you, it hurts.

As for Jim, he called me as I was typing this story up, to tell me what he found out. It seems that the young couple next door is having a bit of a financial problem. She is now out of work, due to a back injury, and there is only one income coming in, and on top of that, they have one Hell of a landscaping bill. Jim feels bad, and would like to help them, as for me, I don't care. But that's just me. I know how to hol a grudge.
