Mar. 17, 2005 Sadly, even Fox is using stock footage of the pristine mountains, crystal streams, jumping fish and cavorting reindeer calves when running a story about ANWR--apparently following the lead of the Mainstream Media (MSM). Congress has essentially passed the bill which will allow us to drill for oil in a tiny corner of the million-plus acre Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. In the area being opened up, not only are there no "pristine mountains" or "crystaline streams" no such terrain can even be SEEN from that small, 2,000-acre spot in the far northwest corner of ANWR. It's true that the so- called "porcupine caribou herd" (some 200,000 strong, by the way) passes through the to-be- drilled area annually, but they don't linger there very long--mostly because of the huge swarms of biting flies and mosquitos. You may remember the "porcupine caribou herd." It was estimated at 22,000 when all those doom and gloom stories were coming out of the environmental movement that the Prudhoe bay drilling and the trans-Alaska pipelines would "decimate" the herd by interfering with their migration routes and calving grounds. That was over 20 years ago and the herd has boomed to nearly 200,000 during that time. How many times in a row does the environmentalist crowd have to be wrong before the public and politicians start to simply ignore them as they deserve? They are waging a big fight in Washington as this is being written, STILL trying to stop it. Unfortunately, even Fox news is running those misleading images in its reportage. It's come to be expected from the so-called MSM. I was of the opinion that Fox news was considerably more honest about the issue. Apparently not. It's vitally important to our national security that we become less dependent on foreign sources of oil and gas. Not even environmentalists deny that. Exploiting the oil and gas KNOWN to be under ANWR is only one means of doing that, but environmentalists would rather risk our security than take one of the necessary steps to improve it--leading one to believe that national security isn't REALLY of concern to them--only winning this dispute. They have a long string of "successes" under their collective belts-- banning DDT, cyclamates, movie-house popcorn made with coconut oil, lead in gasoline, cigarettes and cigars almost everywhere (including even outdoors in some States) ad nauseum. Unfortunately, those successes have only emboldened them to do more and more to actually accomplish less and less. I'm sure that many in the environmental movement really believe most of the nonsense their "leaders" put out, but the fact is, most of it IS nonsense with little or no basis in either reality or science. "Acid rain" acidifying lakes and rivers was (and is) mostly a scam. The "ozone hole" being caused by CFC's IS a scam. There's almost NO evidence that "global warming" is even occurring...and none that it's being caused by automobile exhaust, so IT'S mostly a scam. The Exxon- Valdiz "disaster" in Prince William Sound some years back has caused NO long- term, "disasterous" environmental damages. When Saddam's forces set all those oil fires as they retreated from Kuwait in 1991, environmentalists were predicting a virtual "nuclear winter" from all of the smoke--smoke that disappeared entirely as the fires were put out in about 1/3rd the time predicted. Again, I ask. How many times do these people have to be wrong in their predictions before we start giving them the derision they so richly deserve? ------------ About the author: David A.
