Mar. 17, 2005 Dear oil companies and logging companies, it is with a glad heart that I let you go in to Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and do what you will. After all, Americans don't really care what happens to the world, as long as we have cheap gas and lots of consumer products. But hark, me thinks I hear logic calling on the batphone! Yes, reason is on call-waiting as well. You see, the only benefit of allowing ANWR to be plundered is that oil and logging companies will make more money. I'll still pay the same at the pump, probably more, and we will be no closer to solving the future energy problems. Another dilemma that will come from this is the thought that, if it is okay to go there, what will stop them from going into our national parks? What about the playground at your kids school? What about your yard? Ever heard the term "manifest destiny?" Good thing we care about our constitutional amendments. But I digress. After all, it is only one of the last vestages of nature left undisturbed. what damage will oil and logging equipment "really" do? Well, you see, to bring oil up from the ground, you have to basically drill everywhere. This means that a lot of machinery will be moving about the preserve, making holes in the ground, hoping that they found the oil. If not, they just disturbed the land for nothing. But here is the real winning ticket. It will be at least six years, after the initial drilling begins, that you will finally see an affect from the project. Any immediate benefits? Not likely. Any real benefits? Maybe a couple thousand barrels a day. All in the name of "progress," right? The only progress we are making in environmental protection is that we are creating less environment, making what is left easier to defend. Meanwhile, what was once preserved for future generations will only be a memory, printed in a textbook, made from the trees cut down in the ANWR. Talk about irony! So, how do you make a difference? Start by writing your congressperson and tell them that is not okay to do this and that it is stupid to project a profit from this in the 2006 budget, Mr. President. That's right. You see, the president has already claimed a profit for the drilling and logging in the federal budget. Boy, you have to love this guy? And, if you want to believe that the oil from there will solve the problem, I got a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you. ------------ About the author: Nicholas Olson is a long-time journalist who has been a columnist at his college newspaper and is currently a military journalist.
