Why The Da Vinci Code Is Appealing

By Johan Peters
Mar. 17, 2005

I know Dan Brown´s ´The Da Vinci Code has been out for some time already, however it was not before one month ago I actually bought it. There was simply no escape. It´s the number one best seller in all European countries. Many copies of it were waiting to be sold in my local bookstore. Translations, paperbacks, luxury editions. I bought the English paperback and started to read.

I must admit: from the moment I began reading it, I was fascinated by the story. Dan Brown sure knows how to keep things exiting. One must know some backgrounds of catholic religion and some general knowledge of ancient art, but if that´s the case, it´s not hard to follow the story.

I´m almost at the end of the book and I understand perfectly well why the Vacican isn´t contented with it. If only the half of what the plot is about is true, then we all have been mislead by it for more than 2000 years. The question is: is it true?

Well, I can´t tell for sure. It´s possible Leonardo Da Vinci was a high member of a sect, why not? It´s also very well possible he hid secret signs in his paintings. Opus Dei really exists and is a shadowy organisation. Whether Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married? Hm ...But that´s one of the appealing things about the book. The thought ´Suppose this is true´. I´m very anxious to learn about the end. It sure is the best written book I´ve read for years.

Meanwhile, my own book about relationship and sexuality with disabled or chronically ill people has been published. April 7 is its official presentation. I´m proud of it, although the subjest is brought less appealing (I write non- fiction), and hope many people will read it and think about the subject.
