The Tax On Smoking And Drinking

By Darrel Robert Day Jr.
Mar. 12, 2005

I sat down today...and I got educated. I was ready to write this long article on the terrible deaths of people by drunk drivers. I was going to tell you how many innocent people are killed each year on our highways by drunk drivers every year. I was also going to tell you that while the government is trying hard to raise the tax on cigarettes, that they should concern themselves with taxing alcohol.

I went to the statistics and brought them up side by side. I learned that 43,000 people are killed each year by drunk drivers. With fingers poised, I was ready to go! Then I had a thought. Perhaps I should look at the stats for smoking related deaths real quick. And look I did! I was amzed to see that 430,000 people die each year from smoking related deaths. Wowwww, was I educated.

The government is taxing the heck out of cigs and for a good reason. Please note that I am a very active smoker. They tax our smokes to try and curb the buying of them by minors who normally have a very limited budget. Well o.k., they have a parent regulated budget. They are less likely to spend $4.00 on a pack of smokes then they are to spend $2.00.

Don't take me wrong, alcohol related deaths are still too high for my tastes. Even one is too high if that one is you or a loved one or for that matter... just somebody you never knew. Somewhere, we have to educate our society to the dangers of driving while impaired. I don't have the answer for exactly how to do that. I only know that a lot of loved ones are lost for a very unneeded reason. How-ever, the issue of some 400,000 plus people losing their lives to smoking is a huge issue. Knowing that my smoke being exhaled from my lungs is responsible for killing someone does bother me. I will be more tolerant of non-smoking signs now. I will be more respectful of those who do not wish to breathe my unwanted smoke into their lungs.

In my efforts to educate you, I was in fact the one that came away a little more educated. I think that by looking for my "in" to speak against one thing, I won the opportunity to learn something myself. And isn't that what we are all trying to do? I don't always go looking for new education but I am glad that it sometimes comes looking for me.

Take a moment to think of a subject that you wish to know more about. More-over, think about something you think you have the corner on for being "IN THE KNOW." You may find yourself being given more of an education than you went looking for. And that... is a good thing. Read back and see where I have left some "useless?" knowledge? I hope that you too were educated.
