Mar. 11, 2005 I don't know when he went. I don't exactly if he WAS a he. Okay, I have a good idea when he went because he was gasping his last and making a last valiant stuggle this morning, but Fritters is dead. I don't know much biographical backround. He came to us last August as a birthday gift for my son from his sister. We didn't think he'd make it this long. Fritters was my son Wesleys' fish. Goldfish to be more precise.Carassius Auratus if you will. Actually Fritters was just his nickname. I don't recall the long *ss name my son named him originally. My son had wanted a puppy. I said no. A kitten, no.I told him if you have something it had to be something low on the food chain. So he got his sister to get him a fish. Fish, of course, have a characteristicly short life span. At least around here. So for Fritters to live seven months here is very long for him. Wal-Mart only guaranteed him for a month after all. I was actually getting used to feeding and caring for him. I'd talk to Fritters whenever I was in the kitchen. I'd change his water. He even seemed to wage his tail when I went to feed him. He seemed to know me. When I changed his water he would swim around and be real excited. He showed a lot of life. Not this morning. I knew something was up when I found him on his side. When I went to take him out he swam a little feebly. I got him to move a little more, but eventually that was it for Fritter. Well, nobody lives forever, especially not a fish. Was there something else I could have done to keep him alive longer? Could I have done something with the water, or did I feed him too much? What are the optimum living conditions and care for goldfish? Did I miss something, or was I too ignorant of fishy life cycles? Who knows? I guess I did everything I could have. I think he had a very happy life, if any fish did. I know I'm going to miss Fritters. The old water was good for my house plants.
