Jewish Nobel Prizes And The Holocaust

By Thomas Keyes
Mar. 8, 2005

As I mentioned in my article, "Jews: Figuring the Odds," in the period 1901-2000, Jews, numbering 0.25% of the population of the world, received 128 of 718 Nobel prizes, the odds against the chance occurrence of such a landslide being 9 x 10^188 to 1, that is, 9 followed by 188 zeroes to one, praiseworthy and astonishing.

But in analyzing these data, I happened onto a very doubtful and suspect phenomenon, which also can hardly be due to chance, viewed from the standpoint of statistics and probability. Let me explain:

Out of their 128 prizes for the century, Jews won 22 in the period 1901-1942 and 106 in the period 1943-2000. If they had continued to collect prizes at the rate they had set between 1901 and 1942, Jews would have won 30 prizes, rather than 106 prizes, for the period from 1943 to 2000, in which case they would have won 52 prizes instead of the 128 prizes that they did win. But suffering a supposed loss of about 33% of their population in the holocaust, Jews might have expected to win only 20 prizes, rather than either 30 or 106 prizes, in the period 1943-2000, and would thus have ended up with a total of 42 prizes, instead of 52 or 128, for the entire century.

At first glance, it might appear that Jews, receiving 106 Nobel prizes in the period from 1943 to 2000, as against 20 prizes probabilistically expectable, collected 86 extra prizes in the post-holocaust period, but that number should be reduced to 73 extra prizes, as the economics prize was instituted only in 1969, and could not have been anticipated by the figures for the pre-holocaust period. These statistics are tabulated below:

ACTUAL NUMBER OF PRIZES
Pre-holocaust.........22
Post-holocaust.......106
Total................128
ADJUSTED NUMBER OR PRIZES
Pre-holocaust.........22
Post-holocaust........93
Total................115
EXPECTABLE NUMBER OF PRIZES
Pre-holocaust.........22
Post-holocaust........20
Total.................42

The adjusted number of prizes is the number that excludes economics prizes, while the expectable number is the number of prizes Jews could have been able to expect, once population losses had been considered, if they had continued throughout the century at the tempo they had established between 1901 and 1942. The figures to compare are 93 and 20, which means that 73 extra prizes popped up after the holocaust.

What is the likelihood that such an unexpected explosion of Nobel prizes could have occurred spontaneously, completely by chance? To answer that question, let us assume, with Samuel Untermyer, that Jews are the aristocrats of the planet:

The total number of prizes awarded in the period 1901-1942 was 208, and the Jewish share was 22. Thus Jews made up 10.58% of the Nobel community in the first 42 years of the century, which is a 42-fold overrepresentation. But this is as it should be, since Jews are the aristocrats! The total number of Nobel prizes awarded from 1943 to 2000, less economics-related prizes, was 465, with Jews winning 93.

So if we assume that Jews naturally make up 10.58% of the Nobel population, what are the odds against finding 93 Jews in the post-holocaust group of Nobel laureates numbering 465? Substituting numbers in the formula given in the abovesaid article, we have:

O = 372! x 93! / 465! x .1058^93 x .8942^372 - 1 = 1,174,051,355 Thus if we allow that Jews are entitled to a 42- fold overrepresentation among Nobel prizewinners in the first place, the odds against the chance occurrence of such a boom, lasting from the holocaust till the end of the century are over a billion to 1.

The conclusion is inescapable that the upsurge in Jewish prizewinning is causally related to the holocaust. How could this be? What do Nobel prizes have to do with the holocaust? I can think of three possible connections:

1.) Jews used the holocaust to enlist the sympathy of the Nobel Foundation; 2.) Jews used the holocaust to pressure the Nobel Foundation; 3.) Jews used the holocaust to pressure publishers to spotlight their achievements and dazzle the Nobel Foundation.

Doubtless, Jews are entitled to a good share of the prizes, far more than their numbers would suggest, but it looks as though manipulation and machinations may have played a role in their phenomenal preeminence.
