Mar. 7, 2005 Since the editor has called for articles about hot topics and people in the news, I thought I might do a little research on a few of them. What I was hoping to do was form some opinions on a few people and news items and write about them here. Well, sorry to say, no such luck. I started out doing some digging on Micheal Jackson. After quite some time, I realized that I am in no position to form any type opinion on this man for one simple reason. That reason is that I do not form opinions based on lies or incomplete information. How can anyone form any type of real, thoughtful, or accurate ideas concerning his guilt or innocence? There are just as many folks out there who are backing him up as there are folks who are trying to tear him down. Some of whom make some very good arguments. However, those arguments are based solely on speculation, because the only ones who know the real truth are Michael himself and those children who are accusing him of molestation. Even when the trial is over, we may still never know the real truth about what did or didn't happen because people have a problem with lying, even while under oath. So, how can I, or anyone else for that matter, form anything even close to resembling a coherent and accurate opinion of Mr. Jackson without knowing the facts? In my opinion, we can't. That is up to the jurors in the case. They will be the only ones in this country equipped with the knowledge to form a completely educated opinion. And like I said earlier, who really knows if all the information that will come out in court will be accurate. Thats just the way the system works. Even though I have read extensively on this issue, I am in no position whatsoever to form any kind of opinion and neither is anyone else outside the courtroom. Period. Moving on to another high profile individual...Michael Moore. Is what this man presents to America in his films truth? Once again, who knows. You might as well just flip a coin. On one side you have Mr. Moore touting all of his conspiracy theories with what seems to be "factual evidence" to back him up. To see this evidence all you have to do is go to his website. He has posted facts to back up his claims in every thing he has presented in the movie Farenheit/911. However, there are at least four anti-Moore websites that contain just as much "factual evidence" to refute those claims. So we are left to ponder who's evidence is actually factual. We will never know. I have seen his movies, I peruse his website on a daily basis, and I even saw him live here in Toledo. I have also read an enormous amount of information that is contrary to what he has to say. So, again, I can not form an opinion on this man and his claims due to a lack of hard evidence. How am I supposed to decide who's facts are truthfull and who's facts are false? I can't and neither can you. Period. Seeking truth in anything these days has become an exercise in futility. Everyone is right and everyone is wrong all at the same time. So where does that leave us thinking folks? Somewhere in the middle, swimming around in the weeds of deception that are starting to choke the river of truth. I can only come to one conclusion after writing this, and that is the fact that I am not going swimming anymore. It's a huge waste of time and intellectual energy. Trying to sift through it all. I would much rather read an article about an experience an author had, or about some interesting tidbits of little known factual information on anything from animals to cars, or from gardening to foot fungus.
