The Never-Ending War [I Will Remain Agnostic]

By Brian Edward Scott Sr.
Mar. 4, 2005

This is not an article about the ravages of war in the world, complete with the related stories of carnage and man's inhumanity to man. Instead, I am focusing on a battle of wits; or lack of in some cases.

This is a conflict that will not be won by either side, for there are countless degrees of understanding and knowledge in the world. With as many people as there are on the earth, some six-billion given as a ballpark figure, there are just as many ideas on our origins and how the Universe functions. With this, I am talking about the war of, "Atheist vs. Christian". I did not put Atheist first because of a personal leaning toward Atheism, I put Atheist ahead of Christian simply for alphabetical purposes. In reality, I am partial to neither side. Neither the Atheist nor the Christian can prove their stance to convince me one-hundred percent.

I have, what I would like to think of as, an open mind. At this time, I cannot be convinced that something can come from nothing. One of the great laws of the Universe (physics) is that energy is constant, meaning, that what was, always will be.

However, I also do not believe in talking snakes and donkeys. I also do not believe that by eating an apple, all "sin" (negativity) was released into the Universe. The story of the Universe, in all aspects cannot be explained away so easily as both sides would like for one to believe.

To an Atheist, I would ask: If there is no intelligent design, why then is everything which is in our eyes, "living" structured towards survival? Apparently there is intelligent design of some sort, even if it is just for that purpose; survival. Whether that design incorporates the ingenious methods that some animals use in disguising themselves from being eaten; or to be "invisible" to their prey, there is some sort of inevitible motivation. Another example is the design of the bird's wing. If there is no motivating factor behind this design, in which humans finally copied by the way, for their "magnificant" invention the airplane, why is the shape of this wing one which allows for flight? For those that do not know, the shape of a bird's wing from a cross section view is rounded at the top, and "flat" on the bottom. This allows for air to move more rapidly over the top than at the bottom. Because the air which flows over the top of the wing must reach the air which was split at the leading edge of the wing the same time as that of the bottom, lower pressure is created at the top. The higher pressure at the bottom of the wing pushes up on the wing, 'trying' to fill the void caused by the lower pressure. This gives lift to the object attached to the wing. These are laws of physics, laws which were not created by man but have belonged to the Universe from which we came. Speaking of physics, the latest calculated theories from the great minds, (I am not saying this with sarcasm), include the "String Theory". This mathematically centered, (as all theories are) theory breaks down the structure of all matter below the molecular level, to mere vibrational patterns. One of the aspects of the String Theory is that, the lower that level of vibration, the denser (in structure) an object will be. I ask,What then "plays" these vibrational strings like a beautifully sychronized musician? What came first the bird, or the plane?, the eye, or the camera? The ear, or the speaker? I believe in 'intelligent design' even if it is just for survival. If there were not, than the wing of a bird could have evolved flat because it would not matter if the pressure above or below the wing was greater. Certain 'laws' have to be followed; even the Universe "knows" that.

As for the Christian, I will make this much more simple, because your beliefs are--much more simple. By mentioning 'Christian', I am taking in all religions of Diety worship. It is just that Christianity is what I know most about, and is most prevelant within the United States. I do not believe in fairly-tales, and just as with fairy-tales, none of your claims can be proven.

I will use one example and leave it at that. There are more examples than I can write down here, so I will leave it with the story of a rainbow.

When I was much younger, I had been told, and I later read for myself, that in Genesis 9:12-17 the Lord God put the rainbow in the sky as a covenant between himself and man to never flood the entire earth again. Later in life I learned what causes the phenomenon of the rainbow. I also noted that I saw the rainbow when I washed my bicycle on a sunny day. With that being said, Was the Lord reminding a nine-year old boy that he would not flood the earth again? Get real. I am Agnostic. If a God appears before me with all of the secrets of the Universe, I will not be dumb enough to declare that a personal God does not exist. Until that time, I will remain Agnostic.
