Watching The Loons Come Out At Night At Denny's

By Lee Zelhart
Mar. 1, 2005

Why is it the nut cases come out late at night? I've sat up many times at the local Denny's drinking coffee and it never fails if I stay long enough I see the loons come out.

There are, of course, the standard red blooded American drunks. There are the subspecies redneck drunks. There are the people who for some reason, or another are on the road late. These are mostly truck drivers and various sales personnel who must be someplace far away before morning,or on other important business.

Then there are the loons. The guy whose jaw is wound so tight it will never shut down. He runs his mouth for hours and you wonder how he, or she ever gets any oxygen into their system. Maybe that is why they never seem to have a point. Okay, I guess they do, but after three, or four hours you kinda blur everything they say together.

Some of these are not drunk; just wound up on something tight as a drum. They don't even know their talking. They just do. They're like my son, I suspect, and would even talk in their sleep. Of course that is just a supposition on my part.

Some of these people are celestial philosophers searching for truth. They are rather like never ending Fox Mulders with questions and seeking answers. The truth, for them is always out there.

There are people who don't seem to know what is going on. They have nothing better to do. They are getting out and have no other place to go late at night. I understand these somewhat. In a small rural community there isn't much choise after a certain hour.

Some of the people I see out have just got off work and want to wind down before going home to bed. Some are just getting something to eat before going to work. They are not loons, per se, they just are in the process of going about their business.

There are those who are in any number of moods and mindsets. They might laugh with others and kid around, or stare morosely into their plates and suffle food around. There are those who are just wanting to pick a fight with someone and they don't care what about.

There are other types out there and they don't fit any one hole. You don't understand. I don't hate these people. I like them all. They add a little seasoning to life. Why do I think that? I'm one of them. I'm out there too. The only question is...which group of loons do I belong to? Well, maybe a little of all of them. Cie le vie!
