June 30, 2005 I was doing research online, trying to see just what was out there in the form of support for working people when I discovered something very disturbing. I was on the Monster.ca message board, the forum in which you could find support from other people in the same situation. I thought this was a very good idea and decided to check it out. I could not believe what I saw; there was a post that rocked me to my core, it read: “Ha, ha, I’m sitting in my hotel room in Edmonton, I’m here on business cause I got a great new job making lots and lots of $$$ and you losers are still there complaining and whining about why you don’t have a job” the post has since been removed but I ask you; what is wrong with a person who posts such a message? Clearly she is not sitting in a hotel room in a city not her own, making lots and lots of $$$ online, talking to people she considers losers. But that’s not the point; what on earth would possess anyone to go to a support board and try to make people feel worse? I decided to go to other message boards to see if this was just an anomaly. I went to the New York Times message board and I came across this little gem; “You seem to be some sort of blithering idiot, dithering in his overweening arrogance, and completely incompetent to address a topic.” What’s going on here? I checked out a few more message boards at random and found the same thing. Not everybody is as obnoxious as the abovementioned, but what astounds me is the bile; the mean-spiritedness. I submit, if these boards were not anonymous, you would not see such ignorance. So why, when safely tucked behind the wall of anonymity do some people’s baser aspects come out? Why so nasty? Could you imagine a world where people behaved like this in the open? Is this the way people secretly wish to behave? If not, why is it they do it when they know they will not be called on it?
