June 30, 2005 I used to think that there were some universal, unspoken forms of communication that required nothing else. Take for example, showing a friend, relative or co worker a treasured piece of jewellery or artifact. Showing someone something means just that, now if you plan to give the person whom you are showing off the item, then that is a different matter. Well, at least that’s what I thought until I saw on the evening news a piece about New England Patriots football team owner, Robert Kraft and Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Apparently Mr. Kraft showed the Russian president one of his superbowl rings, and he, Mr. Putin pocketed the piece of jewellery, thinking it had been given to him. Of course later on, a news release stated that Mr. Kraft wanted Mr. Putin to have the ring as a gift. So in light of this event, should some of us now exercise a little caution when showing that friend or relative a treasured piece of jewellery or other item you hold dear to your heart? For fear that that person may misinterpret your gesture as something else? For you know, the person to whom you are showing a particular item might also have such an instant and strong liking for it that he/she too might want to have it as a token of your generosity. And probably much to your surprise at that, since you did not indicate at first that you were giving that person the item. Or maybe you could also be selective in what item you show and to whom to avoid any animosity, ill will or even envy. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
