June 30, 2005 If I was in the position of counselor to the Christians posting to this forum, I would be considering, right now, counseling a certain person to go cool. It is not difficult to detect anger in certain sentences. A Christian can ignore words out of anger; knowing they are to be expected. Most times the anger has nothing to do with the Christian personally. The anger is almost always directed at God. He can take it. He doesn’t really need any particular defense from us. I also understand the desire to defend oneself. Jesus told Peter to put the sword away for it would surely have gotten him, and perhaps others killed. But God never tells us to put away our words. We just have to be careful that we are using God’s Word as our sword and not as some crude club to knock sense into the spiritually senseless. So go cool, Christian. Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world. You can personally draw on the wisdom of God. In a spiritual warfare, you have the power. Those who do not know God are at a disadvantage. It is almost unfair. We want to be careful also of which debates we want to continue. If the debate can be Christ centered, and if we have our scriptural ducks in order, then we should be able to hold our own in any confrontation involving the spiritual. That is our chief battlefield anyway. We are wise to understand politics, science, and history. We should not get wrapped around much of this however. The men of history were both believers and unbelievers. Some of the finest men produced from American society did not care much for religion or God. That was their choice. It did not make them any less capable as generals, politicians, lawyers or jurists. (Such things are a little more debatable I will admit over the past 50 years). I know that you know your primary purpose as a Born Again Christian is to preach the Gospel. I have been admiring Billy Graham. He unabashedly considers himself a Democrat. Actually, that’s the way Democrats were in another day. Now he seems more a symbol of Jesus sitting among sinners that are paying no attention to him. But Billy Graham is an example of faithfulness like few others. His message has been the same for generations. It is the message of the cross of Christ. It doesn’t matter what is said against us. We are nothing except what we are. God gave us his word that we would be faithful in speaking it to others. Go cool; stay on message.
