The Waterbed: Some Think It's Hot, And Some Don't

By Judy Ramsook
June 29, 2005

Back in the mid to late eighties it seemed like almost everyone you associated with or dated was fascinated with the waterbed. While it worked well as a good conversational piece, I still up to this day do not understand what all the fuss was about.

For example, while this type of sleeping equipment may conform to your body, some landlords had strict rules about such things. Like if you had an apartment on the second floor or higher, it was against the rules to have a waterbed, for fear of course that it would spring a leak and then there was the issue with the weight of the item after it had been filled with water.

And until you became accustomed to it, you couldn’t exactly jump out of bed like you would had you slept on a conventional bed. I mean after the first night of sleeping on such a contraption, it would take a few seconds to actually try to get out of the bed, at which point you are probably thinking, so much for feeling as if you have slept on the ocean.

But if you happened to like the waterbed, everytime you moved from one place to the next, assembling it seemed like a little adventure of its own. Not so much putting the frame together, but the actual filling up of the waterbed mattress. Then hours later when that was complete you had to adjust the water temperature to suit your liking.

Of course today, I don’t hear many people trying to impress you with having such an item in their bedrooms like most people did back then. Or maybe some have realised that it’s easier and quicker to jump out of a conventional bed in the morning as opposed to getting out of a waterbed. And after they have moved from one house to the next, maybe they just want to sleep rather than waiting for a waterbed mattress to fill up with water until they can do so.
