June 29, 2005 In a recent interview Dick Cheney said that the insurgency in Iraq, which has tormented the U.S. for the past two years, is now in its "last throes." I.E., the insurgency won't last much longer. However, Donald Rumsfeld, said in his own interview on June 26th, that the "last throes" could last for up to twelve years, directly referencing Mr. Cheney's comments earlier. Sounds like a discrepancy to me. But to add to the confusing words of the two Bush Administration members are the words of General John Abizaid, the chief commander in Iraq, who said that the situation in Iraq is essentially the same as it has been for the past two years. In other words, little ground has been gained on this insurgency. So, what's going on? Is Cheney lying? Or does he simply not have all of the information? I would say that, either way, it's not a good indicator to the American people when three men overseeing the Iraq War seem to all be saying something different. Cheney says that we're in the last throes, Rumsfeld says that those "last throes" could last anywhere from six to twelve years, and the commander in Iraq says that little to no progress seems to have been gained. But, back to the original question: is Cheney lying? I doubt that he would be so grossly misinformed by the American Military Officials that he would actually think that we are in the "last throes" of this insurgency, particularly when his generals and the Secretary of Defense are saying that we are far from done. So did he lie? Technically, yes and no. I hate to do this, but I cannot help but be reminded of Vietnam. Now, I do not believe that Iraq is another Vietnam--yet. However, I draw striking resemblance between Mr. Cheney's remarks and the repeated assurances of the Johnson and Nixon Adminstrations that the VietCong were about to collapse. It was not until the Tet Offensive of 1969 that people finally began to realize how much the administrations had been lying to them. So, is Cheney lying to us? Unfortunately, I cannot say an answer. I would say, given historical similarities and the statements of others that he is, but maybe he's not. Maybe we actually can get out of Iraq with a real "Mission Accomplished" (even though we never found the WMD's!). But I doubt it. My feeling is that this is another attempt by Mr. Cheney to keep public opinion for the war up, and try to keep those in Iraq that they will be able to go home soon. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a student at Madison High School in Madison, New Jersey.
