ECW One Night Stand [DVD Preview]

By Eric Schomburg
June 29, 2005

Since I never believed the hype leading in to a WWE/ECW pay-per-view, that and I was on vacation, I didn’t watch the ECW ppv, and quite frankly I am saddened that I didn’t see it live. However, I DID buy the DVD and it was worth the money. Let me go on record by saying that ECW’s One Night Stand did what WWE nor WCW couldn’t do in a pay-per-view. F**k the storylines, f**k the "pretend it never happen" promo’s; in other words, let’s never mention the Matt Hardy/Lita/Edge BS that happened, instead cover it up with Kane. ECW’s One Night Stand DVD was a great DVD full of great wrestling-Lance Storm vs. Chris Jericho-great violence-Dudley’s vs. Sandman/Dreamer and Mike Awsome vs. Tanaka-and of course, just to remind everyone watching that the WWE is producing the show, a so-called "invasion" from the WWE’s elite.

While watching ECW’s One Night Stand I was amazed that some of the alumni of ECW was a no show, not surprised, but amazed. Raven, Funk, and Douglas were obviously not going to be a part of the WWE’s driven ECW event. However, I was surprised to see Sabu, Sandman, and Joey Styles, yes, Joey "I never sell out to WWE" Styles. Don’t worry, Joey, I don’t blame you for signing on, you are just as much a part of ECW as Paul Heyman.

The first match was Chris Jericho vs. Lance Storm. This was probably Storm’s last match, but what made me love the match was that it was stylized like ECW. You can tell when you’re seeing WWE moves and ECW moves. Jericho and Lance came out in their ECW gear, no Y2J pyro, it was a cheap Lion-Heart vest, which put tears in my eyes, because the nostalgia was kicking in.

The highlights for me was the "shoot interviews" by Rob Van Dam and Paul Heyman. About all the matches were incredible, in fact....let me put this in caps that way Vince can read it.....THE ECW MATCHES PUT WWE AND WCW MATCHES TO SHAME!....thank you. However, the downfall about the ECW DVD is the BORING reminders of RAW and Smackdown wrestlers being at attendance. It seemed like every 5 minutes they had to show JBL being drunk, Bishoff being cocky, or Angle claiming that my mother taught him how to give fellatio. Yikes! The horrible thing about the DVD is that it has an alternative commentary, and all it is is a DRUNKEN JBL blabbing on and on and on and on and on and on and on...*yawn*...on and on and on about how he is so great and how ECW sucks. Now, to be fair, I’m not sure if JBL was being "in character" or being "himself". Let me go on record in saying, if he was "in character" than he is a fine damn character, if he was being "himself" than the guy needs serious help, and when I mean serious help, he needs to be locked into an institution for having delusions of grandeur. Because, I believe that JBL suffers from dyslexia, because I think he wants to say he’s the wrestling DOG, but gets it backwards and instead says, the wrestling GOD. Trust me, I can think of 10 million other wrestlers, including Doink the friggin clown, that are more eligible for the title of wrestling God than John Bradshaw Layfield.

What I hated the most about this "alternative commentary" is that it doesn’t last long; no wait, that IS the reason why I liked the "alternative commentary", but I think it was a stupid idea on WWE’s part to add such terrible alternative commentary. However, the Styles and Foley commentary to me is the ONLY commentary available for the DVD.

Another horrible F-up by the WWE’s part was the obvious and downright degrading cutting of the cusswords and music. While I understand why Vince would not put in the licensed music in the DVD (despite you can still hear Enter Sandman over the crappy WWE music that was displayed for Sandman), but beeping the cusswords? Come on, Vince! I’m just glad he didn’t take out the shoot promo’s.

I will admit that I did get emotional seeing Joey Styles and Paul Heyman cry. It was an emotional time for both of them, including myself, because I remember ECW, and to me it was and still is THE best wrestling venue ever.

If I had to label a disappointing moment for the PPV itself was Rhyno vs. Sabu. It wasn’t a bad match, but I seen both guys wrestle before and it wasn’t the worst match they had, but it wasn’t their best. In the end, I think Sabu was p***ed about it, because he knew he could do better. To prove to you that Sabu could have had a better match, I remember watching an ECW event and it was great, but Sabu stole the show every time. It was still a good match, but it wasn’t the best, and it wasn’t the worst. The worst match, if I could say there was a worst match, was obviously Guerrero vs. Benoit. I don’t know why these two couldn’t have had a better match, because if you watched them both in early ECW, they had better and faster wrestling matches. I can’t explain why these two couldn’t have had a better match, but this was NOT their best.

Is this DVD worth it? HELL YEAH! If you love wrestling, and don’t want a 20 minute boring promo by Triple H, or another boring Chris Masters challenge, or another $250,000 RAW Slut Search, or more slang like "slobberknocker" than this is the DVD you’ve been craving for. Real wrestling, real shoot interviews, real commentary by Mr. Styles. On a side note, Joey Styles more moves than JR could imagine. JR calls it the tazmission, it’s called the katahajime. Styles knows it, I bet JR can’t even SAY IT! With the DVD you get blood, you get sweat, you get tears, you get violence, you get...*gasp*...WRESTLING! You even get a little fire. I would say you don’t get JBL talking, but hey, at least he’s not doing another three move wrestling match like he does on Smackdown.

"Quick, hide your wives, it’s Edge" -Paul Heyman.

ECW One Night Stand DVD = 9 out of 10
