June 28, 2005 Gone are the days for what was once a popular father’s day gift item. The item? The handkerchief. Like maybe some people didn’t know what to get for their father on the day set aside to pay tribute to him and someone would jump up and say, let’s get him some handkerchiefs. It seems that in the not too distant past, some men and women alike would carry around a handkerchief, be it in the woman’s purse or the man’s jacket pocket. It was there, for it represented something. It defined how refined and sophisticated you were as an individual, and it is probably a good thing to have if the occasion calls for it. For example, if some persons are attending a formal occasion such as a wedding or a funeral, then a handkerchief will be an appropriate item to have. You know, to indicate that you practise good manners in case someone starts crying, you just whip it out and pass it on to that individual. But what if you happen to have a runny nose due to allergies or a cold? Hardly anyone might want to carry around a soiled handkerchief all day when you can use disposable tissues for such purposes. Handkerchiefs are good to have, they are there to display how well mannered and sophisticated you are, but if you happen to have a runny nose, then the disposable tissue may win the contest of which item you would rather use for that purpose. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
