June 28, 2005 Once upon a time there was a quiet little town in New London,Connecticut called Fort Trumbull. It wasn't Beverly Hills, but it certainly wasn't the projects either. Some of the people who lived there include a woman who was born in her house in the early 1900's, the house had been in her family for a century, others spent decades working hard to get the money to buy their homes on this lovely waterfront - they deserved this, they earned it, it was a nice life. Then one day, drugs threatened this sleepy town, turning neighbor against neighbor. Those that succumbed to the drugs turned evil, they just wanted more, they didn't care what happened to their friends and neighbors, as long as they could benefit from drugs. Drugs became so prevalent that there remained only a few families who were not affected. Everything these good people were ever taught dictated that they fight tooth and nail to protect their homes; this was their duty, nay, their responsibility. They were not going to go down without a fight, they would defend their homes and their way of life - this was the right thing to do - this was America, home of the brave and land of the free, after all. They battled for seven long years, some of their neighbors moved away in their quest for better drugs, but like the bad neighbors they were, they abandoned their former community leaving a mess in their wake. The city councilors made a deal with the pushers and were determined to drive out the families who would not abandon their homes- the pushers needed these homes - they wanted to make a factory where they could make more drugs and these families were standing in their way - so they made life as miserable as possible for them. They were so evil most people would have been forgiven for surrendering - but not these people, they were fighters and they knew they were in the right, so they fought on. Gradually they were being depleted of the energy required to fight, they were becoming more and more afraid that they would lose, but then the super heroes arrived; some good people from the Institute for Justice took up their cause and brought it to the highest court in the land, which, unfortunately, is presided over by the most evil of men; Justice William Rehnquist - he has the word Justice in front of his name to try to fool people into thinking he does the right thing. These judges get to do what they want because they have a job for life. They are appointed by a president, even when the president isn't president anymore, because presidents have this thing called term limits so as to ensure a dictatorship does not come into effect, but these judges don't have that - so even if their senile, or get corrupted, they have a job for the rest of their lives. You have to remember that some presidents get affected by drugs too, they let these drug pushers become legal, so that they are not breaking the law - this way it makes sense when they talk about their war on drugs - when they say that, they are talking about the kind they didn't let be legal, the imposters. The good people of Fort Trumbull believed that good triumphed over evil, they had to, that's the very thing they were fighting for - but drugs are dangerous things....they lost their battle, the law says you can only take someone's home if it's blighted and is marked for redevelopment, or if it's going to be for public use, it's called 'eminent domain' but this drug pusher was a private company, they didn't fit the criteria - that is, until the judges twisted the criteria and said well, it will bring more people to the city, cause they'll want drugs too, so then it benefits the public. And since they are the bosses of the law - they got their way. It was a very sad day for the people of Fort Trumbull - but everyone should realize that it could be a bad day for them as well - if this could happen in Fort Trumbull, it could happen where you live too! ------------ About the author Susan Daley: I live in Ontario and love to write.
