Natalee Holloway And Insensitive Remarks About Her Disappearance

By Kurt Mayer
June 28, 2005

To Peter Larson: I am so glad you took the time today to assail Paul Reyes over his irresponsible and patently offensive diatribes on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. I was horrified and shocked to read Mr. Reyes opinions ("Why Natalee Holloway Gets So Much Coverage", "Natalee Holloway Disappearance Not A National Tragedy", "Natalee Holloway Disappearance: A Cautionary Tale") and that he had the audacity to voice them publicly.

Bravo to you Mr. Larson for doing what I could have done but didn't. Thank you for not making the excuses I did -- "it'll take me too long to draft something that clearly expresses my outrage, yet evokes sadness about the sensationalist press going too far" or "forget it, who would even print it", or even "yeah, like voicing my objections would even make a difference".

Let me tell you something Mr. Larson. You took the time. It made a difference. It made me hang my head in shame that I didn't cry out at Mr. Reyes' unbelievably insensitive remarks. The next time I recoil in shock or my heart attempts to rend itself in two over something I have read, I will answer back. I will cry out and demand decency. I will stand up and be silent no more.

Thank you for waking me up,
