June 27, 2005 Going to the gym is a scary experience for anybody who is overweight. A perception of eyes on the largest person at the gym causes deep anxiety. I am an overweight person who has over come that fear. The gym is a place for overweight people. At least gym owners need to realize that a population needs to be served, over weight individuals are scared of being looked at. Maybe an area of the gym could be sectioned off for the overweight. I know in this day and age segregation is frowned upon in every form but we now have women only exercise clubs, why not a club for the overweight? The US population is facing a huge problem with weight. Being overweight leads to higher health costs. Overweight also cause low self esteem. I had to bite the bullet when I started going to my local gym facility. I was terrified of being stared at. I hated the way may body looked. I had in-laws telling me that my weight was bad, they did this in very painful and humiliating ways. But my mother was overweight, my grand mother was overweight, her mother was and so forth; plus I do have a disease that makes loosing weight even tougher called PCOS, those factors gave me excuses for why I did not want to go to the gym to work out. Other than the fact that I did not want to be stared at for my giggling stomach or feel eyes were on my over sized bottom.
This is a learning process for everyone, getting over
each individual fear has to be faced and over come.
The overweight of America need to get over the fear of
working out, or the world will make this country fail
because the population is unwilling to fight for its
health. A healthy person is smarter and able to
compete for jobs on a global level.
