Natalee Holloway Disappearance: A Cautionary Tale

By Robert Paul Reyes
June 27, 2005

I'm a freethinker who believes that religion has no place in the public arena, but in the Natalee Holloway disappearance the press is leaving out the moral dimension.

I don't believe it's the role of the media to act as moral watchdog, leave it to the preachers to draw moral conclusions.

But it is the responsibility of the press to report all the facts; the media has been negligent of performing this all-important duty in the Natalee Holloway case.

The press has not been pointing out the irresponsibility of Natalee's parents in letting her go to Aruba. Young people don't go to Aruba to study the local wildlife, they travel to the island paradise to get "their freak on." Aruba is well known for it's casinos, beaches and bars.

The media have also failed to report Natalee's irresponsible behavior. Yes, Natalee is an honors student, but she also engaged in risky behavior. It's possible to be an honors student and to be wild and reckless, the two things are not mutually exclusive.

If you leaved a casino after midnight with three strangers in a foreign country, dressed in a miniskirt and a halter top; that's a recipe for disaster.

The media doesn't need to harp on the moral aspects of this case; just report the facts, and let the public draw the conclusions.
