June 26, 2005 Water is normally wet. I had a mother and a father as I was growing up. I also had brothers and sisters. We were a family of eight people; sharing family chores and fun equally. I had many friends growing up. My best friend was George. He lived right next door. We liked the same things; playing baseball; battles with toy soldiers; marble shooting; baseball card and comic book collecting; and sticking our tongues out at girls. George had had polio and he didn’t get around too well. We played baseball in his backyard so the other kids in the neighborhood wouldn’t make fun of the way George would run. George was bigger than I was so we were pretty evenly matched in his back yard. He’d win a game. I’d win a game. George could hit that “wiffle” ball over his fence. I’d get close, but George had longer arms. He could really swing that “wiffle” bat. George moved away a week before my 9th birthday. Crickets can be noisy insects. Some horses are big, while other horses are small. My next “best” friend was Jim. His family was from Texas. His dad was in the military and stationed at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. They moved into the house next door and my Dad became friends with Jim’s Dad. Jim and I didn’t become friends right away. We had nothing in common except age and the need to take the same school bus; so we had the same bus stop. We were always arguing about one thing or another. He always had to be right; so I would call him “fatty” or “Fatso” or tell him he had the “fattest butt I ever saw” and he’d get all mad, throw me on the ground and sit on me. Jim was fat, but he was very sensitive about that. He was not so sensitive though that he would fail to make me pay dearly for calling him “Fatso”. He would not let me up till I yelled that I was sorry and that I would never say it again. Three minutes after he’d let me up I was calling him “fatty” again and running for dear life. Jim liked music though. He and I tried out for the school chorus and we both became tenors. That’s how we got to be best friends. I stopped calling him names; he stopped always trying to be right, and we defended each other against any mean kids that gave us grief. Automobiles usually do not move without a driver. Aircraft are built for movement in the air, while boats are normally meant to be on water. Most all types of grass have some variable shade of green for coloring. Dust, is, well, dusty. I learned how to swim. The lesson came in handy. It was the same day I learned that people will normally sink in deep water. After Jim’s family was reassigned, I lost all track of him, as I had with George, earlier in life. The families that moved into the house next door afterward either had small children or no children. I had plenty of friends, but no one stood up as “best”. Of course, no one stood out as “worse” either. I’ll never forget George or Jim. They were both great friends at a time when friendship was more important than the girls and cars of my later years. ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 300 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
