June 25, 2005 I still have the ability to find it fascinating that those to the left of center continue their use of analogies to Hitlerian Germany and metaphorical imagery, in order to categorize those of us who tend to agree that the war in Iraq was necessary. That is why I found Dave Wile’s article so interesting. To prove his less-than-accurate points, Mr. Wile uses quotations from Thomas Jefferson (so many use Jeffersonian quotes to prove anything and everything they wish that it is now expected that they will appear in at least 40% of all written “political-stance-proving” articles), ostensible quotes from some “German citizen after World War II” (Mr. Wile provides us with no name) and Howard Zinn (a friend and colleague of another self-proclaimed extreme leftist Noam Chomsky). In his article “Have We Become They”? Mr. Wile’s also engenders wide-sweeping assumptions that those who oppose President Bush’s policies are labeled “traitors”, “un-American” and “alarmists”. Hmmm. I don’t believe that to be true, Mr. Wile. If one actually wishes to be accurate, most of the mean-spirited and epithetical rhetoric seems to be coming from the left…not the right. To use but two examples of Democrat leaders’ statements (there are so many that it would take a very prolonged essay if not a book to include them all), I offer the following. First, I cite DNC Chairman Howard Dean (with just two of his myriad comments): “I hate Republicans” and “Republicans are evil and brain dead”. Then there is Senator Harry Reid (paraphrasing a statement made by Al Gore) who told Tim Russert in a December 2004 Meet The Press interview: “President Bush is a liar. He betrayed Nevada and he betrayed the country.” Sen. Reid called President Bush a traitor. I challenge you to quote any Republican or conservative leader who has said the same, regarding any Democrat. That quote does not exist. To give us the tenor of where his article was going, Mr. Wile stated: “The following excerpt comes from statements made from a German citizen after World War II in regards to how they “allowed” their democracy to become a fascist dictatorship.” In further quoting his still-unknown “German citizen after World War II”, Wile includes: “One hears no protest, and certainly sees none. You know, in France or Italy there will be slogans against the government painted on walls and fences; in Germany, outside the great cities, perhaps, there is not even this.” AARGH and HORRORS! Mr. Wile insinuates that the USA has become Hitler’s Germany! Although patently false, his allusion is inescapable. Wile wishes the readers to come to the conclusion that we on the “right” are Fascists or Nazis. To the contrary, Mr. Wile. Protests and dissentions from the left are both evident and allowed in our country. Do you remember the San Francisco flag-burnings and the burnings-in-effigy of President Bush after the 2004 elections? No one was arrested. No. Mr. Wile. Any attempts at suppression are coming from your leftist brethren…not from the right. Although we do not like yours and your fellows’ juvenile activities and name-calling, we conservatives recognize your right to express your lunacies within our established laws. Can you say the same? I didn’t think so… ------------ About the author: Sher Zieve is an author and conservative political commentator.
