June 24, 2005 The Netherlands will get a new American ambassador soon. His name is already on many tongues: Roland Arnall from LA. Didn´t know the good man, so I read the article in my newspaper to find out what kind of person he is and whether he would be skilled well to become an ambassador in The Netherlands. To start with the latter: I can´t tell. He seems to never have been into diplomacy. He´s a very rich entrepreneur who deals in mortgages for poor people. That looks noble, however the same article said his practices are somehow notorious. The methods of Ameriquest, the name of his company, are said to be rather aggressive. Okay, 90% of all companies in the world use aggressive methods to enlarge their market share and revenues. No matter how. This isn´t the shocking thing to me. What is shocking to me is why this man is going to be the next American ambassador in our country: because he has helped raising funds for the re-election of President Bush very successfully! He has paid the largest legally admitted sum himself as well, my newspaper tells me. So, I understand one can actually buy a high diplomatic job in the USA without the necessity to be skilled for such a high position.
