June 22, 2005 People were very emotional in the aftermath of 9/11. That was natural: nearly 3000 people died in the most agonizing circumstances and some TV networks even carried the poignant site of a couple jumping from the building, hand in hand. However, this administration has failed to answer the simple question that was posed from the very beginning: "What does an invasion of Iraq have to do with what happened in New York on 9/11?" The administration gave a two part answer. First, they suspected that some elements of Al Qaeda were obtaining help from Saddam's regime. Secondly, Saddam had weapons of mass destruction and, in the aftermath of 9/11, it represented too grave a risk to leave them in his hands. Both these reasons for going to war have subsequently been proved to be spurious. Saddam's secular regime was always hated by Al Qaeda and the weapons of mass destruction have stubbornly refused to turn up, in spite of the minutest search. Much more convincing, has been the evidence that strongly conservative elements in the Bush administration had always wanted to depose Saddam by military means and that 9/11 had simply given them the excuse to act. The problem was that Cheney and Rumsfeldt had envisaged a quick and clean action that would depose Saddam and leave a pro American democratic element in charge. Strange as it may seem, they never believed that the majority of ordinary Iraqis would not thank them for getting rid of a despotic ruler and even take arms against them as an occupying power. Now we have the messy situation predicted from the beginning by many well informed sources: after winning an easy conventional war, the US military has been put in the position of having to fight a guerilla war against a shadowy and unknown foe, hellbent upon their destruction. It wasn't supposed to be like this and as the US mortality figure approaches 2000, realistic solutions to Iraq's problems seem as far off as ever. So why did the US invade Iraq? And was it worth it? ------------ About the author Jon Aristides: Read, 'The Black Scarab of Amun-Ra'.
