Why Natalee Holloway Gets So Much Coverage

By Robert Paul Reyes
June 21, 2005

An All-News TV station is in the business of disseminating information, but it's also is the business of garnering ratings. The producers of CNN, MSNBC and FOX News select news items that are informative and interesting.

Their dream story is a "Missing Woman Saga" that will fill up a lot of air time and generate a lot of interest. There are hundreds of women who disappear each year, producers have a lot of individual tragedies to choose from.

But it seems that only affluent, attractive white women, like Jennifer Wilbanks, Natalee Holloway, Chandra Levy and Elizabeth Smart receive 24/7 exposure on the all-news cable outlets.

Why? It's because the producers of these media giants believe that the American public will only become emotionally involved if the "woman in peril" is an attractive Caucasian.

I'm Hispanic but I care very much about Natalee Holloway and desperately hope that she will be found alive. The decision makers of the all-news stations are underestimating the American public. White Americans would be just as interested in the disappearance of a Tamika Huston as they would be in the disappearance of a Natalee Holloway.

Some of the biggest stars in cinema are African Americans; we identify with and cheer for Will Smith, Morgan Freeman and Wesley Snipes as they battle aliens and evildoers and fight for "Truth, Justice and the American Way."

Americans will identify with and become emotionally involved in the disappearance of an African American, Hispanic or Asian female.

CNN, FOX News and MSNBC need to be a little bit less cynical and demonstrate a little bit more respect for the American people. They need to be fair about the way they cover missing persons.
