Natalee Holloway Coverage: Like Groundhog Day

By Robert Paul Reyes
June 18, 2005

According to a CBS article, Natalee Holloway's aunt says each day seems like "Groundhog Day," the Bill Murray movie in which each day was the same as the next.

I couldn't agree more with Natalee Holloway's aunt, indeed I feel like I'm eternally condemned to repeat the same day, over and over again. Every morning I wake up, tune in to FOX News or CNN and there's Natalee Holloway's smiling face. Natalee beaming at her graduation, Natalee frolicking with her friends, Natalee with her mom -- it's Natalee 24/7.

But wait, how long have I been stuck reliving Groundhog Day? Wasn't it just yesterday that Jennifer Wilbanks was on FOX News 24/7? Jennifer Wilbanks at her wedding shower, Jennifer goofing around with her pals, Jennifer with her dimwitted fiance...

And before that it was Laci Peterson and before that Elizabeth Smart and before that...

The missing woman's name changes, but she's always white; she's always attractive and she's always affluent.

Maybe I've died and gone to hell and this is my punishment for resenting all the white, rich high school girls who looked down on everyone else. Maybe this is God's cruel idea of a joke.

How I wished I lived in an parallel universe where a missing African American or Hispanic girl would generate as much coverage from the media as a missing white girl.

I hope Natalee's aunt Groundhog Day nightmare is soon over and I hope that the Media stops its obsessive Groundhog Day type coverage of missing white girls.
