June 18, 2005 Wellllllll, here we go. Looking up the definition of the word free was rather enlightening for me. It says that it means Given without cost. To give without expectation of items or payment. Unchained or set loose. Hmmm??? Well that is interesting when you consider that daily I receive mail sayig "YOURS FREE." The mail says that I can get a "free" computor just for reading their pitch. There is the one that says they are holding my "free" IPOD and all I need do is fill out the forms. The one that really tosses my mind around, and lord knows it has room to toss, is the Grants. I have been applying for grants now for about a year. Grants to help with my writing costs. Grants that will help me catch up and never need to be repaid. Grants that are set aside just for the people who truly need them. Non-profit organizations that "want" to "give" me their money!!!!!!! Hmmmmmm??? Well, I have opened their sites, read their letters, sent them the info they need. I am showed them the needy side of this starving artist. Over a million dollars spent by myself and insurance company's to keep my wife alive for the past 20 years. Motel and Hotel bills that stacked up quickly for when she was in hospitals out of state and I needed a place to stay. {I do want to say that the chairs and couches in hospitals aren't all that bad if you bring your own pillows. ;)} I told them of money needed to help with gas and stuff when I go on my book signings out of state. Do you know what I found out?? I found out that "free" means something else then what Mr Webster told me it meant. "Free" means "if you buy our book on how to get grants"... "It means Free to a good home but not yours." It means........ it means that unless you purchase some thing from that site or pay for "THE LIST" {sounds eerie} then you are probably going to be doing soup again tonight. I know beyond a doubt that there are honest people out there that have the knowledge of how to get a grant. I dont think all of them are trying to rope you into the "We can give you $25,000.00 dollars as soon as you send us $300.00 dollars for the application." Is it just me or would it make more sense for them to just send me $24,700.00 dollars and keep the three hundred back??? Hmmmm??? Maybe I am thinking outside the box here. If I had that money laying around I might not be asking for the grant. If you know of a "FREE" site that truly gives out the $100 million dollars that they tell me is just sitting there waiting for me, show me... Because believe me when I tell you this. "FREE" does NOT mean free.
