June 12, 2005 You don't expect professional wrestlers (oxymoron?) to engage in eloquent soliloquies when referring to their opponents. You will most likely hear gems like this: I'm a gonna rip my opponent's fool head off and give it to my kids so they can play basketball with it. We shouldn't expect a scholarly exchange of ideas when politicians cross swords with each other. I can't understand the faux outrage of Republicans at Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean's recent colorful statements. Earlier this week, Dean told a rapt audience that Republicans are "not very friendly to different kinds of people. They are a pretty monolithic party. . . . it's pretty much a white, Christian party." That's not exactly a newsflash, you don't have to be a rocket scientist or a political science major to notice that the Republican Party is indeed a bastion of white Christians. And it's no secret that Republicans are not very friendly to different kinds of people, namely gays, minorities and anyone who is not a white Christian. Dean also recently declared that Republicans "never made an honest living in their lives." That statement is a slight exaggeration, it would be more accurate to state that "Republican politicians never made an honest living in their lives." Actually, after further review, I should say that "Politicians never made an honest living in their lives." Hyperbole is the stock-in-trade of used car dealers and politicians. Let's get real, Howard Dean is just being Howard Dean. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes is a columnist for the Lynchburg Ledger.
