Natalee Holloway: Another White Damsel In Distress

By Robert Paul Reyes
June 11, 2005

Natalee Holloway vanished while on a five-day trip with 124 classmates and seven chaperones celebrating their high school graduation.

But now the blond beauty is everywhere, her sparkling eyes beaming on every all-news cable channel.

The flesh and blood Natalee is probably dead, but the video Natalee is alive and thriving under the glare of the media.

Many white Americans feel that their Eurocentric way of life is under attack by multiculturalism. They cling to white damsels in distress like Jennifer Wilbanks, Laci Peterson, Elizabeth Smart, JonBenet Ramsey -- the list is endless.

These white damsels in distress represent the "White American Way of Life". When Caucasians turn on the radio it's dominating by hip hop, when they go to the movies many of the top stars are African American, so they find solace and refuge in their precious white damsels in distress.

America is by and large a secular society, but these damsels in distress become saints. When writers dare to suggest that Natalee's lifestyle may have placed her in danger, we are branded as cynical monsters.

We are supposed to bow down and pay homage to these icons of White America. We are supposed to hold our collective breath, until these innocent and pure damsels are rescued.

Forgive my impudence but I don't think that the major cable news networks should be held hostage to these symbols that represent a homogenous society that never existed.

Forgive my boldness but I think that CNN, FOX News and MSNBC should be spending most of their time covering important issues like Iraq, the Patriot Act, unemployment, the high price of oil -- just to name a few.

I hope that a miracle happens and Natalee Holloway is found safe and sound, but I'm praying that a bigger miracle takes place and the media will stop its creation, deification and saturation coverage of white damsels in distress.
