June 11, 2005 I'm pretty sure Gene Roddenberry didn't intend it. As a matter of fact I'm sure he never gave it a thought, but Star Trek is racist. I'm serious. I was thinking of this yesterday morning returning from the hospital in a nearby town(city, whatever)and I got to thinking (I do that sometimes) there are no Asiatic Vulcans. It's not logical and it gave me pause and fodder for something nobody considers, I'm sure. Look, we all know Spock, Sarek, Surak, T'Pol, and all the Caucasoid Vulcans. Right? And of course viewers of Star Trek: Voyager know Tuvak; who is Negroid. Anyone out there recall ever seeing a Mongoloid Vulcan? Yeah, I thought not. It isn't logical. Humanity generally falls into three racial groups. Maybe there are, or were, more. Be that as it is there are three basic groups humans fall into. Why not Vulcans? Am I the only one to notice this?I doubt it, but say I'm the first to point it out. I'm sure Spock's folks developed in the more temperate zones of Vulcan(if there is such a place as Vulcan is HOT) and Tuvak's people in the equitorial regions. I mean if humans developed into three groups, more or less, why didn't Vulcans? After all Vulcan society is rather oriental in nature so there is some connection there. I have a few thoughts on that. First, they never developed at all. That's a possibility, but doesn't make sense. Why on Earth and not elsewhere?(Andorians are another matter as they all tend to be blue, however that's a topic for another article. Orions tend to be all green, too. Why?) Second, they were all wiped out during Vulcan's violent period. Vulcan had a blood thirsty past which Spock implies makes Earth history look tame. Maybe the other two groups killed them off. It wouldn't be the first time whole populations have been wiped out. The case of many groups of native Americans (why are they called that? Isn't a native someone born in a country?) make my point. Whole tribes died off, or were killed outright. Other groups around the world have also ceased to be as well. My third theory is Mongaloid Vulcans are isolationist, or seperatists. The above mentioned violent history of the planet might be the answer. Maybe they cut themselves off before Surak brought peace to the rest of the planet. Maybe somewhere on Vulcan there are Mongoloid Vulcans carrying on with their lives without interactiong with the others, or maybe they just requested the other groups leave them alone. Another thought just hit me. Another reason we don't see Mongoloid Vulcans. Maybe they are the group which became the Romulians. It would only be logical, right? ------------ About the author: Lee Zelhart is a proud graduate of McKendree College and the author of The Ghost of the Cavalier.
