Useless-Knowledge: A Good Bowl Of Chili

By Stan Grimes
June 8, 2005

I had a thought last night, hard to believe huh? It was on my mind right before I went to sleep. It was an idea for an article, but I’ve forgotten it. I think it was about writing and just how relevant our ideas are to readers. Perhaps the question should be, how relevant is Useless-Knowledge Magazine?

In a world that is tilted one way or another through media presentation, relevance is a rather ambiguous word. What is relevant to some is not relevant to others. The viewer, the reader, or the listener then can only qualify relevance. This magazine, U-K, is judged on relevance by several methods: by its Google ratings, its quantity of readers, its quality of material, its feedback from readers, and its impact on readership. Columnists on this site find it difficult to judge their impact on readers, except of course for the occasional pat-on-the-back by other columnists, and an occasion nice email from a stray reader. Let us not forget the various nasty emails and body slams; they can sometimes cause the less hearty of columnists to enter into a thro of mental meltdown.

Useless-Knowledge Magazine, in my opinion, is relevant, more so than many of the well-read hardcopy magazines, the powerful television commentaries, or radio monotony. Why? Useless-Knowledge columnists come from every background imaginable. They represent the heart of humanity. To me, it is a safe place to visit, to discover what is really on people’s minds. A great deal of honesty is presented on this site and some very exceptional writers make this presentation. If you enjoy discussions on religion, atheism, sports, handy tips, politics, or just plan ol’ bantering, Useless-Knowledge offers it. It is a reprieve from the daunting repetitions viewed on other media avenues. It is also a reprieve from the dog-bite stress of daily living. It is a massage for the aching mind.

When I was sixteen, I used to love going to the gas station (that was back when they actually worked on your car). I loved to listen to the “old timers” bantering with one another. Each had an opinion about life and all that occurred in life. Since I was sixteen and had developed no opinion about myself, or life, I found the conversations magical. None of the old guys were real sophisticated, nor were they all that honest, but they had something to say and say it they did. Useless-Knowledge is a gas station to me. There’s a whole bunch of wisdom here.

If “variety is the spice of life,” Useless-Knowledge” makes one helluva chili con carne.
