So Long Reality Television, Hello Imagination!

By Barbara Anna Marjanovic
June 7, 2005

Is the world full of people with no imagination? Or is it that the North American film industry has gone into a hole that they are having a hard time getting out of? I believe that is the case.

I may not be a seasoned writer or be well-rounded in all of the world’s information, but one thing that really hits home with me is that whenever I turn on the television I see another reality show. I’ve had enough, have you? From watching a poll on CNN a month or so ago, this feeling appears to be unanimous in the general public. I wish that I had the percentages now, but from what I can recall, the numbers were quite staggering. There were less than 30 percent (and I am being conservative on this percentage—my belief is that it’s a lot less) of people who were not tired of reality shows. Okay, film world, get some imagination!

We as an audience want to see new and thought-provoking movies and shows. One comment from my group of companions was really interesting, “It’s like Hollywood has lost all of its verve and has to either look at real life stories or have people react to certain situations to make an interesting story happen.” True enough. I would be so bold as to say that of course real life stories are interesting. Why? Because they actually happened! Of course they are going to be new and interesting—it had happened to someone for goodness sakes! But now these shows are starting to get lame. As television starts to push the buttons as hard as they can with shows such as “The Real Gilligans Island” and “Fear Factor” they just start to get ridiculous, repetitious and plain boring. Biographies of people’s live happen across a whole life and now you are trying to push things to happen to people within six months or less! Hmmm…how interesting could that be? Trying to push stories to happen just doesn’t work sometimes. I wish the film world would get that part straight.

We need imagination—we need the writers that we had of old and the screenwriter’s that created stories out of nowhere to make our own imaginations fly. Challenge yourselves, writers and really make the world a better place! Create worlds within worlds, create a girl’s story without following someone elses’ story! Put your feet into another’s shoes and live their lives! Breathe life into a character and write a screenplay, write a novel, write a story to make people come back and say, “Now that was truly, an original and well-thought out movie!”

I will always go back to the best supernatural movie that I’ve seen—that would be the Sixth Sense. This movie I feel, was the most well thought out movie I have seen yet. You had to watch it at least twice to understand it. Some people I know watched it five times to do so! But regardless, everyone I know loved it. I know some highly logical, mathematically inclined individuals that will tell you that this was the best movie that they have ever seen and that Bruce Willis is brilliant in it. These people are the ones that are the hardest to please and usually don’t like just any story plot—but each one of them loved this movie and agreed it was well made. Their second choice is The Devil’s Advocate—and they absolutely love Al Pacino.

I’m trying to write more and more imaginative and well-thought out works—I believe this is will always be what audiences want. They take longer to produce, and your volume of work is less, but the end result is well worth it. We all, as an audience want that. I say, “So long, Reality T.V., hello imagination!”

Till next time…
