July 31, 2005 Nineteen years ago when the space shuttle Challenger was destroyed, so were the seven astronauts on board. Two years ago when space shuttle Columbia exploded over Texas, another seven astronauts families’ lives were changed. All in the name of space exploration and doing repairs on other satellites already in space. Is it worth it? If evidence of alien life forms is discovered in space by some of these astronauts, will the people whose tax dollars are being used to fund such projects be made aware of the aliens’ existence, or will they be given no as a response. If robots can be made sophisticated enough to perform the same tasks the human astronauts are being sent to space to do, why not use robots. Or will the use of high tech robots eliminate the need for human astronauts, thus making space exploration less exciting. Like maybe some people would not have reason to participate in superstitious activities such as crossing one’s fingers and avoiding walks under a ladder and such on shuttle launch day. For if robots are being used for that trip through space, then there will be no humans on board to be concerned with. And if the shuttle were to be destroyed on take off or upon re entering the earth’s atmosphere, the only thing that will be ruined is the shuttle and of course the robots it contains. Not another seven lives. For astronauts, even though some may not be married with children still have family. They may be someone’s son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, cousin and so on, you get the idea. Family members who may become worried on shuttle launch day and shuttle return to Earth day. On a personal note, I do hope that the seven astronauts in space right now make a safe return to Earth when their mission is complete. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
