Jimmy Carter - The Old Guy Is Still Hanging Around

By Michael John McCrae
July 31, 2005

From the “washingtonpost.com” article “Carter: Guantanamo Detention Disgraceful” by Cassandra Vinograd, AP, 30 July 2005; “Former President Carter said Saturday the detention of terror suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval base was an embarrassment and had given extremists an excuse to attack the United States.”

Some Carter quotes: 1) “I think what’s going on in Guantanamo Bay and other places is a disgrace to the U.S.A.” 2) “I wouldn’t say it’s the cause of terrorism, but it has given impetus and excuses to potential terrorists to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts.” 3) [Guantanamo] “may be an aggravating factor … it’s not the basis of terrorism.” 4) “I ‘m embarrassed about it, [Guantanamo] I think its wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use despicable means to hurt innocent people.”

Now, there are no qualifiers in Mr. Carter’s statements before the “Baptist World Alliance”, who were the recipients of this latest attempt to justify the receipt of his 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. He does not explain the ways America is disgraced by locking away some of the most evil and vile murderers on the planet.

Mr. Carter “wouldn’t say” Guantanamo was “the cause of terrorism”, because he could not possibly say that. Terrorism, especially Islamic induced terrorism had been going on well before anyone was ever sent to Guantanamo Bay

Amazingly, Mr. Carter believes that adhering to Islamic dietary restrictions; permitting prayer 5 times a day; and giving away free, new Korans; not to mention some of the world’s best medical and dental care including prosthetic legs that permit them to return to the battlefield to kill more Americans has given the terrorists “impetus and excuses … to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts.”

What planet has Mr. Carter just recently arrived from that he would be unaware that 9/11, Yemen, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, and the first WTO bombing of 1993 were all “despicable means to hurt innocent people” long before anyone was incarcerated at Guantanamo?

Ms. Vinograd again quotes Mr. Carter: 1) What has happened at Guantanamo Bay … does not represent the will of the American people.” 2) I thought then, and I think now, that the invasion of Iraq was unnecessary and unjust. And I think the premises on which it was launched were false.”

Mr. Carter does not speak for me. My will in all of this terrorism is that the terrorists should all be killed very dead. We should not be coddling them and giving them new legs so they can go back to their homeland to kill some more. We should not appease and make nice to terrorists. Mr. Carter himself is proof that when you appease terrorism, terrorism takes the advantage for 444 days and sends your Presidential legacy down the rat hole.

Mr. Carter is free to think what he thinks and he is free to voice his opinion. He believes 17 ignored UN resolutions and the active funding of Palestinian Terrorism was not justification to shut Saddam down. He uses the exact same words as Mr. Kofi (I didn’t know anything about Oil-for-Food) Annan; declaring the battle of Iraq as “unjust”. I don’t believe Mr. Carter or Mr. Annan bothered to read the 17th resolution against Iraq. President Bush did read it and acted upon it before it became as ineffective as the previous 16 UN resolutions.

I do understand leftist politics though. It is important that the Carters, the Clintons and the many other talking heads of the left continue to place themselves before any available microphone and declare America the bad guy. The left has all the answers and can fix everything. Just wait and see. As soon as the left decides on its set of “core values”, they’ll be gunning for whosoever the Republicans insist can replace the current President.

We negotiated for 12 years with Iraq; sending 17 resolutions asking Saddam to behave himself and let the babies in Iraq have something to eat besides oil. During those 12 years Saddam was busy showing his sons how to build a proper rape room and torture chamber. He was also showing his army how best to build a mass grave. Mr. Carter says the invasion was “unnecessary”. I think the voices from the graves would disagree with the old guy.
