John Bolton: Job Applicant

By Alexander Flynn
July 31, 2005

It is incumbent upon the job applicant to be totally truthful when they fill out job applications and submit resumes to attain a job.

It is not unheard of for people to be fired from their jobs after discoveries of inaccuracies in the resumes. It is completely justified if an employer researches a resume and job application on their desk and they find inaccuracies that they not hire the prospective employee.

This is the way the world of business works. It is the way our government works when hiring new employees. An employer is justified in wondering what a prospective employee will do if they have inaccuracies or mistakes on their resume. If you make a mistake on your resume and put something on there you did not do and the employer finds out it really does not matter if that was what you intended or not – the content of your resume is what matters.

These rules do not appear to apply when politics are involved. John Bolton is President Bush’s nominee for U.N. Ambassador. The rules do not appear to apply to him.

The people of the United States of America should not take anything else in to account other than the ethics of John Bolton. Bolton apparently “mistakenly stated that he had not been interviewed or testified in any investigation over the past five years.” (From CNN Article: http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/28/cia.bolton.ap/index.html)

Consider for a moment that you are a manager at a company. You are given a resume and job application of someone who knows the president of the company. Pursuing your due diligence you research the person’s resume and find that there is incorrect information on it. That piece of information is something that you specifically asked the person about in their interview. The applicant lied to you, conveniently forgot the specifics or forgot that piece of information.

You raise an objection that the person lacks either the integrity or the brains to accomplish the job you need to fill. The president of the company says ‘I don’t care about that. I think he’s fine and he’s going to work for you.’ This would not make you feel the utmost confidence in either your president or the future of the company.

This is indeed similar to what the people of the United States of America are being asked to consider. Never mind the symbolism that our government is going to take someone in who is either incompetent or an outright liar. This is simply a bad way to run a business and it is a bad way to run our government. Either he was forthright and knowledgeable in his statements or he wasn’t.

It seems pretty clear that he wasn’t. It is undeniably wrong that our president ask us to allow someone to fill a vital position after their integrity to congress is already questionable. What are we to expect if we reward John Bolton for this behavior? Should he run in to something that he does not want to tell congress will he lie? Will he truthfully forget more key information?

Is this the type of performance that the people of the United States of America should accept? If you are a Republican is this kind of performance to be rewarded? His future actions will reflect on your party, is this acceptable?

I think that even the staunchest Republican (even the President of the United States of America) should question if they want John Bolton to represent them to the international community. Consider for a moment that the international community is not blind and they have been watching the proceedings regarding John Bolton as well and that seeing that he lied, conveniently forgot or really forgot key information when he was talking to congress, why should they believe anything he has to say to them in the UN? The answer is that they shouldn’t and they won’t.
